Despite the evidence for therapeutic hypothermia in resuscitation dating back to 2001, and its proven success, it is still not widely practiced in Singapore. It is likely due to a combination of lack of awareness and lack of training.

Dr Benjamin Abella is a world renown expert on resuscitation medicine and has developed a novel training course for therapeutic hypothermia use in the hospital setting.  He is the clinical research director of the Center for Resuscitation Science at the University of Pennsylvania as well as the Medical Director for the Hypothermia and Resuscitation Training (HART) institute at Penn, a national training and certification course in post-cardiac arrest care using therapeutic hypothermia. His work focuses on delivery and quality of CPR, teaching of CPR, neurological prognostication after cardiac arrest, and the delivery of therapeutic hypothermia.

Dr Abella has lectured and written extensively on cardiac arrest and resuscitation. He is a member of the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care task force and contributes in development of international CPR guidelines.

Dr Abella has been invited as HMDP visiting expert for emergency medicine to with the primary aim of helping local hospitals increase understanding and reduce the barriers to this therapeutic modality, so as to save more lives and improve neurological outcomes.
