There is a range of home- and community-based services catering to the diverse needs of patients, to help them age-in-place within the community. However, some elderly patients discharged from acute or community hospitals may require a longer period of rehabilitation and recuperation to improve their mobility and function, to enable them to regain maximum mobility and return home as soon as possible. The Grace Corner, a collaboration between Peacehaven Nursing Home and Changi General Hospital, aims to serve as such a transitional convalescent facility (TCF). As our population ages, the number of elderly with dementia and depression is expected to rise. By 2020, manpower demand for Medical Social Workers (MSWs) is expected to double today’s numbers. Minister Gan shared this at the inaugural Medical Social Work (MSW) Symposium on Sat 14 Apr. Given the progressive effort being made to enhance the capacity of healthcare, it is vital that a strong base of qualified healthcare professionals to deliver quality care is simultaneously developed - and this includes MSWs. Over the next 5 years, the government will invest $3.8 million in the profession, with $1.8 million being set aside for undergraduate and mid-term scholarships, and $2 million to support clinical, professional and leadership development initiatives. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer afflicting women in Singapore. While it can be detected early through regular screening, the National Health Survey 2010 revealed that only 40% of those in the target population had been screened in the 2 years leading up to the survey. Besides the fear of knowing one’s condition, a key barrier to breast cancer screening is ‘inconvenience’ – such as the time taken to travel to and from screening centres. SATA CommHealth’s new Mammo-On-Wheels bus hence aims to address this by bringing its screening service to the doorstep of those who are likely to benefit from it. The Health Promotion Board has also set up the Women’s Health Advisory Committee, chaired by Minister of State for Health Dr Amy Khor, to plan and implement a holistic Women’s Health Programme to equip women of all ages with the necessary knowledge and skills to improve their health. When a child is diagnosed with cancer and has to undergo intensive treatment, he or she often has to stop going to school for a while. The set-up of the School-at-Viva-CCF Hub at the new Novena Specialist Centre, a collaborative effort between the Viva Foundation for Children with Cancer and the Children’s Cancer Foundation, now means that children with cancer can continue learning and mingling with their peers even as they undergo chemotherapy, instead of having to miss school.
