Diseases and Conditions
H1N1

What to do when ill

Symptoms

Influenza A(H1N1-2009) symptoms are similar to those of seasonal flu.

They include:
  • High fever of > 38°C
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Body aches

What do I do if I have flu-like symptoms ?

Members of the public who develop influenza-like illness (e.g. fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose) can visit the nearest Pandemic Preparedness Clinic (PPC), polyclinic, or their GP clinics for initial assessment and treatment.

Be socially responsible. Please put on a surgical mask on your way to the clinic and avoid taking public transport if possible.

Depending on the severity of their illness and other risk factors, they may be referred to the hospital for further management.

What should I do after visiting the doctor?

Be socially responsible:

Avoid the following:

• Avoid close contact with other people.
• Avoid taking public transport.
• Avoid attending large meetings or visiting crowded places.
• Refrain from air travel if possible.

If you need to go out, please wear a surgical mask.

Monitor your condition:

Stay at home and rest.

Drink plenty of clear fluids like water and clear soups to prevent dehydration.

Minimise physical contact with others including household members.

Where possible, keep yourself in a room separate from the common areas of the house, use a separate toilet, and avoid having meals with others.

If you need to come into close contact with anyone, both you and the uninfected person should wear surgical masks, and maintain a distance of at least two metres from each other.Dispose your used mask in a plastic bag, tie it up and throw it into a covered rubbish bin. Wash your hands thoroughly after disposal of the used mask.

If your condition deteriorates and develop symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, chest pain, severe and persistent vomiting etc call 995 immediately for an ambulance to transport you to the nearest hospital for treatment.

If you have been given medical leave, do not return to work or school before the end of the leave period.
