Diseases and Conditions
H1N1

For Parents

The symptoms for children with Influenza A(H1N1-2009) are largely similar to that of adults.

They include:
  • High fever of > 38°C
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny nose
  • Body aches

And can sometimes be accompanied by:

  • Diarrhoea
  • Breathlessness
  • Dizziness

Teach your children to:

  • Wash their hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Cough and sneeze into a tissue or into the inside of their elbow.
  • Dispose of used tissue paper in the trash properly
  • Stay at least 2 metres away from people who are sick.

Be sure to set a good example by doing this yourself.

If your children are sick:

  • Keep them at home and away from school or childcare centers until they recover.
  • Make sure they drink a lot of fluids and have plenty of rest
  • Monitor their temperature and symptoms
  • Give them medication prescribed by the doctor or medicines suitable for a child their age.
Do not feed them medicines for adults or teenagers.
  • Give them a mask before bringing them to see the doctor
  • Keep tissues close to them and have a trash bag within reach for disposing used tissues.
