In Singapore, 80% of the primary healthcare services are provided by private practitioners while the government polyclinics provide the remaining 20%. However, the opposite is true for more costly hospitalisation care, whereby 80% of it is provided by the public sector and 20% by the private sector.
In 2007, there were a total of about 11,547 hospital beds in the 30 hospitals and specialty centres in Singapore. The 7 public hospitals comprise 5 acute general hospitals (Singapore General Hospital, National University Hospital, Changi General Hospial, Tan Tock Seng Hospital & Alexandra Hospital), a women's and children's hospital (KK Women's & Children's Hospital KH) and a psychiatry hospital (Institute of Mental Health).
Singapore today has about 7,384 doctors for its healthcare delivery system. This gives a doctor to population ratio of 1:620. The nurse to population ratio is 1:210, with a total of about 22,332 nurses. There are 1,354 dentists, giving a ratio of 1 dentist to 3,390 people.
