REVIEW OF BASIC EMERGENCY DRUGS AT NURSING HOMES
Under Regulation 231 of the Private Hospitals and Medical Clinics (PHMC) Regulations, every private hospital shall at all times be capable of instituting and making available essential life saving measures and implementing emergency procedures on any person. These include drugs for emergencies and adverse reactions to any form of treatment.
2 The Ministry of Health has reviewed the issue of basic emergency drugs in nursing homes to ensure that the premises are appropriately equipped with basic resuscitation drugs and the drugs are readily available to deal with emergencies when the doctor is on site in the nursing homes. Therefore, all nursing homes are required to make available the following in the home as part of its resuscitation facilities:
i) Air-viva
ii) A range (different sizes) of oro-pharyngeal airways
iii) Means to set up an intravenous infusion
iv) Injection adrenaline
v) Injection hydrocortisone or equivalent
vi) Injection antihistamines
3 In addition, regular checks should be made to ensure that the drugs are not expired and replaced when necessary
