1.            Five nurses were honoured with the President’s Award for Nurses this year. They received their awards from President Tony Tan at the Nurses’ Day Reception held at the Istana today.

2.            The highest accolade in the nursing profession, the national award is given in recognition of nurses who have made significant contributions to the profession and the community. These are nurses who have been outstanding in their competence, leadership, and innovation. They are also dedicated to nurturing young nurses and committed in contributing their professional expertise in the community.

3.            The award is open to all registered nurses from healthcare institutions in the public, private, and community care sectors, and the educational institutions. Nurses are nominated by their institutions, public, or peers, and interviewed by a panel chaired by the Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Health, Dr Chia Shi-Lu, and includes the Chief Nursing Officer, Ministry of Health, Ms Tan Soh Chin.

4.            This year’s award recipients include two heads of nursing from a public healthcare and community care institution respectively, while two others hold a doctorate in nursing. It also includes a male nurse, who is the fifth one to receive the award in its 18-year history. All five have played pivotal roles to strengthen nursing within their institutions, and drive changes in support of healthcare transformation.

5.            The five recipients are:

  • Mdm Kuttiammal D/O Sundarasan
    Chief Nurse, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital

  • Dr Lee Yee Mei
    Assistant Director of Nursing, National University Hospital and
    Head, Nursing, National University Cancer Institute, Singapore

  • Ms Alison Sim Lei Choo
    Director of Nursing, St. Andrew’s Community Hospital

  • Dr Margaret Soon Mei Ling
    Deputy Director of Nursing, Tan Tock Seng Hospital

  • Mr Wong Kok Cheong
    Deputy Director of Nursing, Changi General Hospital

6.            Each awardee received a trophy, a certificate and a $10,000 cash prize that can be used for their professional and personal development.
