100 Nurses Recognised with Nurses’ Merit Award

1. 100 nurses received the Nurses’ Merit Award this year in recognition of their outstanding performance and contribution to the profession. They received their awards from Minister for Health Mr Gan Kim Yong today.
2. The award recipients come from the public healthcare institutions, intermediate and long-term care sector, as well as private hospitals. Each award recipient is given a medal, to be worn as part of the nurses’ uniform, and a cash award of $1,000 which can be used to support their professional and personal development and learning.
3. Started in 1976, the Nurses’ Merit Award is given to nurses who have demonstrated consistent and outstanding performance for the past three years, participated in professional development, and have made contributions to promote the nursing profession. Nurses are nominated for the award by their healthcare institutions and selected by a panel set up by the Ministry of Health (MOH).

MOH launches applications for new Community Nursing Scholarship
5. At the award ceremony, Mr Gan also announced the launch of applications for the new Community Nursing Scholarship (CNS). The scholarship is part of the Future Nursing Career Review Committee’s recommendations to strengthen community nursing and build a pipeline of nursing leaders in community care.
6. The scholarship is offered by MOH in partnership with the Regional Health System (RHS) and community care providers. It is targeted at ‘O’ and ‘A’ level students, existing nursing students and in-service nurses pursing degree studies, who have a strong interest to serve and potential to lead in the community care sector. Scholarship recipients will be fully funded to undertake the relevant nursing diploma and degree programmes. Upon graduation, they will undergo a one-year development programme comprising postings in the acute care as well as community care sectors. Thereafter, they will be required to serve a 3 – 4 year bond with their sponsoring employer.
