The Ministry of Health will be conducting the National Health Survey 2010 fieldwork between March and June 2010. Invitation letters will be sent to 7,500 Singaporeans to participate in the Survey. The invited individuals were randomly selected from household members identified in some 17,000 household units in an enumeration exercise conducted earlier from November 2009 to January 2010.
2 These 7,500 individuals form a nationally representative sample of Singaporeans aged 18 to 79 years. Each of them will be requested to participate in the Survey at one of the following six survey venues:
(i) Bukit Batok Polyclinic;
(ii) Woodlands Polyclinic;
(iii) Hougang Polyclinic;
(iv) Outram Polyclinic;
(v) Tampines Polyclinic; or
(vi) Toa Payoh South Community Club.
The National Healthcare Group Polyclinics staff will conduct the survey at these venues for the Ministry.
3 During the survey, participants will undergo a free health screening and answer questionnaires on their lifestyle practices and dietary patterns. The health screening will involve tests for diabetes, blood lipids, urine and hearing loss; and measurements of blood pressure, and height and weight. Participants will receive their health screening results by post. Participants who complete the Survey will receive $40 worth of grocery vouchers as an appreciation token. For the first time ever, participants also stand a chance to win $300 worth of grocery vouchers each in a lucky draw organized by the Health Promotion Board.
4 All individual information on participants collected from the Survey will be kept strictly confidential. Any information that is obtained from the Survey will only be used collectively to assess the health status of Singaporeans in relation to major health problems such as diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking and obesity. The results of the Survey will also be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Ministry’s national disease control plans, and to formulate healthcare policies and programmes for Singaporeans.
5 The Ministry would like to encourage all Singaporeans who have been selected for the survey to give their full support by participating in the Survey. The Ministry would also like to seek the support of employers to allow employees who have been selected for the survey to participate in it.
