Prof Tan Chorh Chuan, Director of Medical Services (DMS) of the Ministry of Health, will be relinquishing his appointment and returning to the National University of Singapore (NUS) with effect from 1 April 2004. Prof Satkunanantham Kandiah will succeed Prof Tan Chorh Chuan as the new Director of Medical Services.
2 Prof Tan had made significant contributions and improvements to the healthcare system during his four year tenure. He had been instrumental in implementing many initiatives and policies to raise the quality of clinical services, medical manpower and research in the public healthcare sector. Prof Tan also played a key role in the battle against SARS. He worked together with experts and stakeholders to coordinate all the main strategies that we took to stop the spread of SARS in Singapore. He had to make tough calls under high pressure and his leadership and decisiveness helped Singapore to win the battle against SARS. The Ministry is deeply appreciative of Prof Tan's services and contributions.
3 Prof Satkunanantham is concurrently Professor & Head, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, NUS, and Chief, Orthopaedic Surgery, National University Hospital (NUH). An orthopaedic surgeon by training, he has high professional standing as a clinician, academician and researcher. Prof Satkunanantham has good insight in health policy, professional development and a strong and long-standing interest in improving clinical services and care of patients.
