Question No. 3285
To ask the Coordinating Minister for Social Policies and Minister for Health (a) what criteria will guide its selection of conditions for subsidised genetic testing, including clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and the availability of preventive interventions; and (b) whether the Ministry will consider subsidising for more hereditary conditions for which early detection and timely intervention can prevent disease or reduce its severity.
Answer
1 Clinical and cost effectiveness will be the key considerations in determining whether to implement and subsidise genetic testing for a particular condition. We need to ensure that the test meaningfully informs clinical management, and through early detection and intervention, improves health outcomes downstream. This is important given the vast potential and possibilities of genetic testing. Based on these criteria, the Ministry of Health subsidised genetic testing for Familial Hypercholesterolemia since last year, will be doing so for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer from later this year, and will continue to evaluate potential use cases according to the same criteria.
