To ask the Minister for Health based on data from the total burden of disease, for each year in the past five years, what is the number of deaths attributable to second-hand smoke.
Answer
Based on the Global Burden of Disease 2019 study, the annual total number of deaths attributable to second-hand smoke for Singapore was estimated to be 261 in 2015, 266 in 2016, 271 in 2017, 284 in 2018, and 296 in 2019. However, after adjusting for the effect of an ageing population, a reduction in the age-standardised death rate was observed from 4.32 per 100,000 population in 2015 to 4.00 per 100,000 population in 2019.
