Question No. 341

To ask the Coordinating Minister for Social Policies and Minister for Health (a) whether there are any plans to enhance the protocols and training for healthcare professionals who engage grieving families of deceased organ donors; and (b) for Singaporeans and PRs who reach an advanced age, whether the Ministry will consider sending them reminders that they could object/withdraw their objections to the compulsory donation provisions of the Human Organ Transplant Act 1987.

Answer

 1          MOH provides regular training to equip healthcare professionals, including doctors, medical social workers, transplant coordinators, with the skills to communicate sensitively with families of deceased organ donors. There are no plans to enhance the protocols and training for them.

 2          We issue information packages on the Human Organ Transplant Act to all Citizens and Permanent Residents turning 21 years old, to enable informed decision-making and encourage them to discuss their decision on organ donation with their family. We also support campaigns, like the Live On Festival (LOF), to foster broader discussions and meaningful conversations about organ donation. MOH’s public awareness efforts will reach diverse population segments, including those of advanced age, so they can remain informed about their options.
