Question No. 3374
To ask the Coordinating Minister for Social Policies and Minister for Health (a) whether an update can be provided on HSA’s investigations into allegations of businesses advertising magnetic therapy chairs; and (b) whether HSA is monitoring the proliferation of such businesses especially in the heartlands.
Answer
1 To date, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has not approved any magnetic or electromagnetic therapy chairs for medical use. Any application has to be accompanied by objective scientific evidence to substantiate any medical or therapeutic claims and undergo rigorous evaluation, before the product can be registered under the Health Products Act 2007.
2 Given this, HSA had issued an advisory to the company concerned, reminding it to comply with the regulatory requirements and refrain from making unsubstantiated claims that the chairs can treat medical conditions.
3 HSA will continue to conduct surveillance, including advertisements and public feedback, of such products. Any contraventions will be investigated accordingly.
4 Members of the public are advised to be cautious of products making such unsubstantiated medical claims and to consult registered healthcare professionals rather than relying on such products as substitutes for proper medical treatment. Consumers may also approach the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) for assistance in seeking redress with their disputes regarding the purchase of such products.
