The Ministry of Health honoured 81 nurses today with the Nurses’ Merit Award for their outstanding performance and dedication to the nursing profession. This is the largest number of recipients since the annual Awards started in 1976.
Hailing from public sector hospitals, private hospitals and the intermediate and long-term care sector, the award recipients each received a medal, to be worn as part of the nurses’ uniform, and a monetary gift of $1,000, up from $200 in previous years.
The increase in the award value is one of the National Nursing Taskforce’s recommendations on raising recognition of nurses’ work. The Taskforce was set up in 2012 to review and chart the future direction of the nursing profession, and had since submitted its recommendations to the Government. All 15 recommendations by the Taskforce had been accepted, Minister for Health Gan Kim Yong said today, at the Nurses’ Merit Award presentation ceremony.
In his speech, Minister Gan thanked the nurses for their dedication to their patients and reiterated his Ministry’s continued efforts to support and promote the nursing profession.
The full list of Nurses’ Merit Award recipients is in Annex A.
