RECOGNITION OF FAMILY MEDICINE AS A SPECIALTY
31 October 2025
The Specialists Accreditation Board (SAB)[1], with support from the Ministry of Health (MOH), will recognise Family Medicine as the 36th specialty in Singapore from 1 November 2025.
2. This is a significant step to affirm the contributions of family physicians in Singapore. Family physicians with advanced clinical competencies already play a pivotal role in integrated care, coordinating multi-disciplinary care in the community. This recognition will also provide a clear pathway to specialist accreditation for family physicians with advanced training and raise the standards of primary and community care.
3. Family physicians who have attained the Fellowship of College of Family Physicians (Singapore) [FCFP(S)] will be invited to be the first batch to apply for specialist accreditation in Family Medicine. There are currently over 200 registered family physicians who have attained the FCFP(S). Fellowship holders will need to fulfil clinical practice criteria demonstrating currency of practice to be eligible for specialist accreditation.
4. Applicants who have been conferred the FCFP(S) on and before 30 Nov 2025 will have 12 months from 1 November 2025 to submit their applications to the SAB. Applicants who are conferred the FCFP(S) after 30 Nov 2025 will have 6 months from the date of conferment to submit their applications.
5. To better support the care of an ageing population, the family medicine fraternity is developing a new advanced family medicine (AFM) programme with the first intake expected from 2028. This will set the standards for specialist accreditation in family medicine and for entry into the Register of Specialists.
6. Further details of the accreditation process and training requirements can be found on the SAB website at Specialists Accreditation Board.
