Trends in Trauma Injuries
Information on the statistics of trauma cases
Background
The National Trauma Registry (NTR) was established by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in January 2011 with the aim to systematically capture comprehensive and reliable data on trauma cases to assess the national burden of trauma and the performance of the healthcare system in managing trauma.
The NTR collates trauma data from public acute healthcare institutions in Singapore, namely, Alexandra Hospital (AH), Changi General Hospital (CGH), KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH), Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH), Ng Teng Fong General Hospital (NTFGH), National University Hospital (NUH), Singapore General Hospital (SGH), Sengkang General Hospital (SKH), Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) and Woodlands Hospital (WH).
National Trauma Unit: Data Management, Analytics and Reporting
The National Trauma Unit (NTU) was set up by the Ministry of Health (MOH) in 2017. One of its functions is to serve as the data intermediary of NTR. The unit comprises data management specialists and statisticians, who manages the NTR, and does analysis and reporting of trauma data.
Besides ensuring that the NTR adheres to national requirements and guidelines on data and IT security, NTU conducts annual data audits, and regular data validations to ensure data completeness and accuracy. NTU also explores and implements improvements to data reporting, such as creation of data processing tools to automate tasks and dashboards to monitor clinical outcomes and for injury surveillance.

Methodology
The trauma incidence rates were calculated using (i) the total number of new cases seen in the public acute healthcare institutions as the numerator and (ii) the total Singapore resident population as the denominator. Singapore resident population data were obtained from Singapore Department of Statistics and comprise of both Singapore citizens and permanent residents.
