Premium Subsidies and Support

MediShield Life premiums are risk-pooled to support the payouts and benefits under MediShield Life. The Government provides significant support to keep premiums affordable.

The Government provides significant support to keep premiums affordable for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents, including for those who need to pay Additional Premiums.

You can pay your MediShield Life premiums from your MediSave. The following subsidies are available to help those requiring more support.

Types of Premium Subsidies and Support

Premium Subsidies for the lower- to middle-income

  • A permanent feature, available to lower- to middle-income families with household monthly income per person of $3,600 and below, and living in residences with an Annual Value of $31,000 and below.

  • Those eligible can receive subsidies of up to 60% of their premiums. Permanent Residents will receive half the subsidy rate applicable to citizens.

  • If you own more than one property, you do not qualify for this subsidy.

* For those living in residences with Annual Value (AV) of $21,000 or less.

Those with an AV between $21,001 to $31,000 will receive 10 percentage points less than these subsidy rates.
Those living in residences with an AV of above $31,000 will not receive these subsidies.

Pioneer Generation Subsidies and MediSave top-ups

  • Pioneers receive special Pioneer Generation Subsidies of between 40-60% depending on age. This is regardless of their household monthly income or the Annual Value of their home.

  • Pioneers also receive $300 to $1,200 a year in MediSave top-ups (depending on year of birth) for life, which can be used to pay for their MediShield Life premiums.

  • Older Pioneer Generation Seniors who have serious pre-existing conditions also receive additional MediSave top-ups of $50-$200 annually from 2021 to 2025, which can be used to pay for their MediShield Life premiums.

Merdeka Generation Subsidies

  • From 1 July 2019, Merdeka Generation seniors receive additional Merdeka Generation Subsidies of 5% of their annual MediShield Life premiums, increasing to 10% from 76 years old and above, regardless of their household monthly income or the Annual Value of their home. This is on top of the above Premium Subsidies that the seniors may receive.

Phased Support from the MediShield Life Fund

  • To cushion the premium increases arising from the MediShield Life 2024 review, Phased Support will be provided to all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents for two policy years, starting from 1 April 2025. It is applied to the net premium increase between the new MediShield Life premium and the premium before 1 April 2025 (after any applicable Premium Subsidies, Pioneer Generation Subsidies, or Merdeka Generation Subsidies).

  • The Phased Support is automatically given to all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents regardless of household income and Annual Value of their residences. For more info on the Phased Support, please refer to the full report for the MediShield Life 2024 Review.

Additional Premium Support

No one should worry about losing their MediShield Life coverage because they are unable to afford the premiums. This subsidy is for families who need assistance with premiums even after the above subsidies and MediSave use.

How to receive MediShield Life Premium Subsidies

Subsidies are automatically applied

The Government makes it easy for Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents to receive Premium Subsidies.

Pioneer Generation Subsidies and Merdeka Generation Subsidies for Singaporeans will be extended automatically.

As subsidies are automatically applied based on the information we have about you and your household, be sure you regularly update your household information in the MediShield Life e-Service so that you will automatically receive MediShield Life Premium Subsidies to help with your MediShield Life premiums, if you are eligible.

Renewal of your policy

Information on your MediShield Life premium and applicable subsidies will be sent in writing to the payer of your premium about one month before your policy renewal date by the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board or your Integrated Shield Plan (IP) insurer (if you are insured under an IP).
